Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted flooding in July 2025 in some states, including Sokoto, Lagos, and Benue.

This was contained in NiMet predictions for states at risk of flooding this month, released on yesterday.

The agency’s flash flood risk alert for July 2025, showed the states with varying probable risks of experiencing flash flooding events due to the onset of rainfall across the country.

Other states with a notable risk of flash flooding are Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

Meanwhile, NiMet has issued vital advisories to mitigate the potential impacts of flash floods and ensure public safety. It urged residents to “clear all drainage systems around their homes and communities to ensure the unhindered flow of water.”

The agency also advised the public to avoid driving or walking through flooded areas, as “currents can be deceptive and hidden hazards may pose significant dangers.”

The agency noted that the flash flood risk alert for July 2025 shows the states with varying probable risks of experiencing flash flooding events due to the onset of rainfall across the country, as predicted in NiMet Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and some advisories to mitigate its impacts.

NiMet also recommended that individuals living in low-lying areas or those identified as high-risk consider relocating to safer ground if warnings are issued.

Households are encouraged to prepare an emergency kit with essential items such as non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies, a flashlight, and a power bank.
