The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has warned lawful permanent residents, commonly known as Green Card holders, that individuals with prior criminal convictions may face revocation of their residency status and possible removal from the United States.

The advisory, released on Tuesday, aimed to remind Green Card holders of key immigration enforcement rules and reinforce the government’s stance on national security.

“Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident,” the agency stated in the notice.

CBP emphasised that permanent residency is a conditional privilege, not an absolute right.

“Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right. Under our nation’s laws, our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused,” the agency warned.

The statement added that Green Card holders who arrive at U.S. ports of entry with prior criminal convictions may also face mandatory detention and removal proceedings under existing immigration laws.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, focusing on “protecting the American people, safeguarding our borders, and enhancing the nation’s economic security.”
