In a significant development for French football, Olympique Lyon’s relegation to Ligue 2 has been overturned, ensuring the club’s participation in Ligue 1 for the upcoming season.

The decision, made by the DNCG (Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion), marks a crucial turnaround for the seven-time Ligue 1 champions.

Confirming the Lyon’s reinstatement on his X handle, football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, wrote; “Official: Olympique Lyon will NOT be relegated to Ligue 2 and the club will stay in Ligue1.

The decision has been confirmed.”

Also, a statement on the club’s website after being successful in their appeal to remain in Ligue 1 read: “Today’s decision is the first step to restore confidence in Olympique Lyonnais. We can now focus our attention on sporting objectives, fully preparing for next season.”

Lyon’s financial struggles had led to the initial relegation decision, with the club facing a substantial debt of €541 million.

However, the club’s new leadership, under President John Textor, successfully appealed the decision, presenting a revised financial plan that satisfied the authorities’ concerns.

The development has significant implications for both Lyon and Crystal Palace, with the latter potentially losing out on a European competition spot. Lyon’s participation in Ligue 1 and the Europa League now seems certain, pending no further appeals.
