In a renewed push to strengthen social protection for Nigerian workers, the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) is forging a data-sharing partnership with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

It is expected to boost compliance with the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS).

The managing-director of NSITF, Barrister Olúwaṣeun Faleye, announced the proposed collaboration during an inter-agency engagement held at the CAC headquarters in Abuja.

The MD who led a delegation of senior management staff on a courtesy visit to the commission, emphased the need for strategic alliances to enhance the fund’s mandate.

Describing CAC as Nigeria’s central repository of corporate data, Faleye, in a statement issued by the fund’s head of corporate affairs, Alexandra Mede, said the collaboration would enable NSITF to better identify and engage employers, particularly in the formal sector, and ensure their adherence to the provisions of the Employees’ Compensation Act.

“If we build a social safety net for Nigerian workers, we are ultimately creating a resilient economy, workers perform better when they are confident that they are protected in the event of work-related injuries or diseases.

This collaboration is not just administrative, it’s an investment in national productivity,” Faleye stated.

The NSITF boss stressed that beyond data access, the partnership would allow for increased awareness, staff sensitisation and proactive occupational safety audits.

“One of the benefits of this collaboration is the health and safety audits we conduct at no cost. It’s a way to help employers prevent workplace hazards while ensuring compliance,” he noted.

Faleye also commended CAC for its ongoing compliance with the Employees’ Compensation Act by registering its staff under the ECS.

In response, the registrar-general of CAC, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, welcomed the partnership, stressing the strategic role of the commission in regulating Nigeria’s corporate ecosystem.

“You are meeting the largest regulator of the Nigerian economy, every formal business operates under our oversight, which makes this collaboration even more critical, especially as it relates to enforcing compliance and improving the welfare of Nigerian workers,” Magaji said.
