PDP Sues Niger Electoral Commission Over LG Polls

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State has dragged Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) to court over the scheduled November 10, local government election.

Those joined in the suit as defendants are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), the state attorney-general and commissioner for justice as well as the Niger State House of Assembly.

Justice Aminu Garba of the Federal High Court sitting in Minna has fixed 27th of this month for hearing of the case challenging the conduct of the local government elections in the state.

The party alleged that there were violations of the provisions of the constitution and the electoral act on the procedures leading to the conduct of the election.

The case was slated for further mention but on the adjourned date, however, the counsel to the plaintiff PDP, Mohammed Ndayako, SAN, told the court that the parties in the suit agreed to come back on the next adjourned date to take all the pending applications and hear the matter.

The court, having no objection, granted the request of the plaintiff’s counsel and fixed the 27th of this month for a definite hearing.

The plaintiff’s counsel Mohammad Ndayako, SAN, however, said they are in the court to ensure that the proper thing is done according to the provisions of the constitution and the electoral act.
