The Federal Civil Service of Nigeria has joined the nation in mourning the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in the United Kingdom.

In a press statement signed by the director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Eno Olotu, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, expressed condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the family of the late former president, and the government and people of Katsina State.

Walson-Jack highlighted Buhari’s distinguished leadership as both Military Head of State (1984–1985) and democratically elected President (2015–2023), describing him as a symbol of integrity and patriotic dedication.

“President Buhari’s legacy is firmly etched in the annals of Nigeria’s history as a statesman who led with distinction, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to national service,” the statement reads.
The late president was credited with significant public sector reforms, particularly through the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP-20) 2017–2020 and its successor, FCSSIP 2021–2025.

“These policies enhanced transparency, strengthened anti-corruption measures, expanded social investment programmes, and accelerated infrastructure development.

“His enduring impact on the Civil Service, marked by the promotion of efficiency, accountability, and the digitisation of government operations, continues to drive administrative transformation,” she stated.

The head of the Civil Service acknowledged Buhari’s belief in merit, order, and the rule of law, which laid the groundwork for ongoing reforms.

“As we honour his memory, we are comforted by the enduring influence of his ideals on our collective journey toward a more transparent, disciplined, and citizen-focused Civil Service,” she added.

Walson-Jack concluded with a prayer for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul and divine comfort for his family, the government, and all Nigerians during this period of national mourning.

“We pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and for divine strength and comfort to his family, the Government, and the people of Nigeria at this moment of national mourning,” she said.
