Abeokuta is abuzz with anticipation as it prepares to host the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, with delegations from across the continent arriving in Nigeria.
Countries including South Sudan, Seychelles, and Congo have already landed in the city, contributing to the festive atmosphere surrounding this prestigious event, which aims to showcase the continent’s emerging athletic talent.
Set to take place at the iconic MKO Abiola International Stadium, this championship has quickly established itself as one of the largest youth athletics events in Africa.
Among those joining the festivities are athletic powerhouses Egypt, Botswana, and South Africa. With their arrival, final preparations and logistical arrangements are reaching a crescendo. These nations boast a wealth of top-tier athletes, who are expected to deliver world-class performances on the track and in the field.
In total, over 43 countries are expected to participate, with nearly 1,000 athletes and officials set to converge for the event, marking a milestone for Nigerian athletics and the broader African sports community.
The National Sports Commission, in collaboration with major sponsors including the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Bank of Industry (BOI), and LEDCO Limited, has committed to providing a world-class hosting experience.
The championship is set to officially commence tomorrow, running from 16th to 20th July.
