The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi has given reasons for his absence at the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which held on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State.

Obi’s absence at the high-profile event drew criticism from some quarters, especially given his status as a leading opposition figure and former Governor of Anambra State.

Speaking to Arise TV on Wednesday during his visit to Daura where he condoled the family of late former President, Obi said he was unable to attend the burial due to flight challenges.

“It was difficult to come yesterday (Tuesday) because there was no flight,” Obi explained.

“Even if there was a flight, you couldn’t land in Katsina Airport. It was all closed because of the number of dignitaries.”

He emphasised that mourning was still ongoing, noting that his Wednesday visit was still within the appropriate time to pay respects.

“Mourning continues until tomorrow. So, whoever comes today and tomorrow is still part of the mourning,” he said.
