The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has expressed sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, extending condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the bereaved family and all Nigerians.
The bishops conveyed their sympathies in a letter dated July 14, 2025, signed by CBCN President Archbishop Lucius Ugorji. The letter urged the nation to seek solace in faith during this period of grief.
“We commiserate with His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, the family of our late former President, and all Nigerians on this painful loss.
“We entrust his soul to God’s infinite mercy and pray for divine comfort for his loved ones, the government, and the entire nation,” the letter reads.
The CBCN described Buhari’s passing as a solemn reminder of life’s fleeting nature, calling on Nigerians, especially leaders, to reflect on integrity and selfless service.
“This moment of national mourning should inspire deeper contemplation on the value of life and our shared humanity.
“May it rekindle our commitment to the common good and righteous leadership,” the CBCN president said.
The bishops concluded with prayers for Nigeria’s unity and progress, adding, “We ask God to grant our nation lasting peace, wisdom in governance, and collective prosperity as we navigate this loss together,” he said.
