The Coalition of Arewa Civil Society Organisations (CACSO) has called on Kebbi State governor, Dr Nasir Idris, to focus more on addressing governance challenges in the state.
It dismissed the recent criticisms directed at former attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) as politically motivated.
At a press briefing at Arewa House in Kaduna yesterday, the group expressed concern over what it described as “growing public discontent” in Kebbi State due to challenges such as insecurity, deteriorating infrastructure, and economic hardship.
The group’s national coordinator, Comrade Aminu Abbas, said recent comments targeting Malami, allegedly from a group known as the Concerned Northern Forum, were a distraction from pressing developmental issues in the state.
“Since leaving office, Malami has not been invited or indicted by any anti-corruption agency,” Abbas said, adding that the former minister has maintained what they described as a “respectable post-service image.”
The coalition also expressed reservations over a reported N30 million donation made by the governor during a recent religious crusade.
While acknowledging the importance of religious and communal events, CACSO suggested that such funds could be better directed towards strengthening healthcare, education, and security in the state.
“At a time when many public institutions are in dire need of attention, channeling resources to more pressing needs would better serve the people,” the group noted.
CACSO further raised concerns about project execution and oversight in the state.
They alleged that poor supervision has led to substandard infrastructure across various communities, urging the state government to improve transparency and accountability in its contracts and spending.
They also called on Governor Idris to present a comprehensive report of his administration’s achievements, stressing that citizens are eager to see tangible results rather than media narratives.
The coalition observed growing public interest in alternative political parties, such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as an indicator of democratic engagement and citizen awareness.
“Our stand is not about politics or personalities. We are committed to promoting good governance and advocating for policies that benefit the people of Northern Nigeria,” Abbas emphasized.
CACSO encouraged the state government to focus on meeting the expectations of the people.
“This is a critical moment for leadership to rise to the occasion and deliver on promises,” the coalition stated.
