Borno State Judicial Service Commission has dismissed Alkali Zakariya Ali Gabchiya, a judge at the Yerwa Civil Sharia Court, for gross misconduct involving abuse of office and breach of judicial oath.

A statement issued by the acting secretary of the commission, Saleh Khala Jidda, disclosed that this decision was reached during the commission’s meeting held on Friday and Saturday (July 18–19, 2025) at the High Court Complex in Maiduguri.

The commission explained that it acted on the report of the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee, which investigated a formal petition against the judge.

According to the commission, the findings showed that Judge Gabchiya “abused his office and oath and received from the parties a portion of farmland that is the subject in dispute, while resorting to various wrongful acts to cover up his conduct.”

The commission described the actions as a serious violation of ethical and professional standards expected of judicial officers. Consequently, it approved his dismissal from the service of the Borno State Judiciary.

Meanwhile, in addition to this disciplinary action, the statement revealed that the commission also approved the promotion of 26 judicial officers across various grades within the judiciary as part of its commitment to enhancing judicial efficiency and professionalism in the state.
