President Bola Tinubu met with governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja on Wednesday.
Insiders described the meeting as a strategic engagement ahead of Thursday’s high-stakes National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the ruling party.
The closed-door meeting, which held at the Conference Hall of the State House, commenced around 7pm, brought together members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), led by its chairman and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma.
The session was expected to draw attendance from all 24 APC governors.
The meeting comes just hours before the APC NEC, scheduled to convene at 2 pm on Thursday, July 24, 2025, in the Banquet Hall of the State House.
The NEC session is expected to address pressing issues within the party, including the selection of a new substantive National Chairman following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
The APC, Nigeria’s ruling party, has faced internal tensions in recent months, following leadership changes and disagreements over restructuring within the party’s hierarchy.
Thursday’s NEC meeting is widely viewed as a potential turning point in efforts to stabilise the party ahead of key national and off-cycle elections.
President Tinubu’s engagement with the governors is believed to form a part of broader consultations to solidify party cohesion and ensure smooth deliberations at the NEC.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to influence Thursday’s deliberations significantly, particularly on whether the party will adopt a consensus arrangement or move toward a broader leadership contest.
