To stem the spread of cholera as the rains intensify, the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has launched a targeted well chlorination campaign across four high-risk local government areas in the state.

The exercise is being carried out in Bauchi, Tafawa Balewa, Misau and Jama’are LGAs.

BASEPA director of Inspection, Enforcement and Compliance, Muhammad Saleh, said the initiative is a proactive response to the heightened risk of cholera transmission through contaminated water sources during the rainy season.

He said the agency emphasises professionalism and precision in its ongoing operations, stressing that the goal is to protect human lives through science-driven environmental health interventions.

“Our teams are trained to determine the exact volume of water in each well and apply the appropriate quantity of chlorine for effective disinfection.

“Accurate measurements are crucial. We want to eliminate pathogens without posing any danger to residents,” Saleh said.

He further revealed that each field team has been provided with data sheets to document their activities, adding that data collected will not only ensure the integrity of the current operation but will also serve as a valuable resource for future water safety planning across Bauchi State.

Saleh urged the field operatives to remain vigilant and committed to the task, emphasising that BASEPA’s mission is centred on safeguarding public health through practical and preventive environmental actions.
