The Yobe State government, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, has banned ‘Marker Day’ celebrations in both public and private schools in the state.
A statement by the permanent secretary in the ministry, Dr Bukar Aji Bukar, said, the government expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of such celebrations, which have become associated with disruptive activities, public disorder and acts that undermine societal values and moral standards.
According to the statement, these events have strayed far from acceptable school practices and now pose serious threats to discipline and security within the learning environment.
He maintained that the decision to prohibit Marker Day is in response to a rise in indiscipline, moral decay and behaviours that contradict the values of education and responsible citizenship.
“All principals are hereby directed to ensure strict compliance with this directive,” he said.
He said the government reaffirmed its commitment to preserving a safe, disciplined and value-driven education system across the state.
The ministry also warned that any school found to be organising or tolerating such events would face appropriate disciplinary action.
