Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said his position in the ongoing coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), remains unequivocal.

Obi said this in a statement by his media team, debunking statements attributed to him regarding his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his position in the ADC.

Obi has always maintained that he is the coalition to ensure good governance for the country.
However, after the unveiling of ADC as the coalition platform, Obi’s membership in the party has become a matter of speculation.

This comes as former Minister of Information Prof Jerry Gana said the PDP has approached him about returning to the former ruling party.

Also, former PDP national chairman Senator Ali Modu Sheriff said information at his disposal indicated that Obi would return to the PDP and seek to contest the 2027 election under its platform.

However, the national publicity secretary of ADC, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, in an Arise TV programme, named Prime Time, said Obi won’t return to PDP because he understands the risk involved in going back there.

But a statement signed by Obi’s media aide, Ibrahim Umar, said they are aware of two different statements claiming to come from Obi: one that denies his returning to PDP and reaffirms his commitment to the ADC, and another claiming that Obi has been offered the position of the National Organising Secretary, NOS, in the ADC.

“Neither of the two purported statements originated from Obi or his media office,” the statement said.

It added, “The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party has been a subject of speculation in the political space even as he has remained focused on his mission for the establishment of a new Nigeria of our dreams.

“Peter Obi has been unequivocal in his position in the ongoing coalition and didn’t need anyone to put words into his mouth.

“He has remained focused on his mission, but would not accept anybody attributing a statement to him just to satisfy their devious agenda.

“The media office wishes, therefore, to urge the public to disregard any statement purported to come from him outside his media office or his official handle,” the statement added.
