The rumour suggesting a permanent co-chairmen for the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar and the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi in the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria is unfounded and fake.

Chairman of Coordinating Committee of the Council who is also the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar who stated this, said there was not such recommendation by the Council in its constitutional review memorandum.

The Etsu Nupe, in a statement on Wednesday, said there was no such recommendation to the constitution review committee of the National Assembly in the memorandum submitted by the Council.

“The Memorandum submitted to the two Chambers of the National Assembly by the National Council for reinstatement of the roles of traditional rulers did not contain such clauses,” the monarch said.

He said the memorandum only recommended that the role of traditional rulers should be restored in the reviewed constitution.

The traditional ruler said neither the recommendation of the Council nor the bill sponsored by Senator Simon Lalong suggested such “obnoxious clause”.

Etsu Abubakar said such news should be treated as “fake news” and the members of the public should disregard such it as unfounded.

He said the concerned traditional rulers wondered the source of such news and therefore advised the public to be guided accordingly.
