The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has activated emergency response teams, following warnings of imminent heavy flooding in parts of Abuja and neighbouring states.

The National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEWS) of the Federal Ministry of Environment, had predicted severe flooding between July 31 and August 4 in the nation’s capital and nearby states.

A statement by the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) confirmed that 11 high-risk areas in Abuja could be affected.

These include Asokoro, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Damagaza, Garki 1 and 2, Guzape, Wuse 1 and 2, Gwarinpa, Nyanya, the Central Business District (CBD), and Kubwa.

FEMD’s acting Director-General, Engr Abdulrahman Mohammed said, “We have placed our ‘Search and Rescue’ team on red alert to prevent loss of life in case of severe flooding.

“Our priority is ensuring residents’ safety, and we are fully prepared to respond to emergencies,” he said.

The department urged residents to take precautions, advising against driving or walking through floodwaters, urging them to instead wait for the water to recede or use alternative routes.

FEMD also called on communities to clear drainage systems to allow free flow of water and reduce flood risks.

Nearby states, including Niger, Nasarawa, and Kaduna have been placed on high alert, with residents of areas such as Suleja, Mashegu, Sarkin Pawa, and Rijau in Niger State at risk of high flood risks.

Similarly, Mararaba, Gidan Rogo, Wamba, Agima, Rukubi, and Odogbo in Nasarawa State are also under flood threat. While Zaria, Jaji, Kauru, Kachia, and Buruku in Kaduna State may also experience severe flooding.

FEMD reassured the public that water levels were being closely monitored and mitigation measures already in place.

Residents were reminded to stay alert, avoid flood-prone zones, and heed official advisories from emergency agencies.

“We are working round the clock to minimise the impact of flooding. Residents must remain cautious and report emergencies promptly to the appropriate authorities,” Mohammed stated.
