The United Nations (UN) has applauded the Nigerian government for its contributions to global peacekeeping while calling for international supports towards ending the ongoing insurgency in the country.

UN acting resident coordinator and WHO country representative, Walter Mulombo, made the call on Saturday in Abuja, during a peace walk organised by the UN system in Nigeria to celebrate the country’s contributions to peace, as the UN commemorates it’s 77th anniversary.

The UN Day is observed on October 24 every year to commemorate its official creation in 1945. The theme: “The UN and Nigeria: partnership for peace, prosperity and sustainable development” draws attention to the need for peaceful co-existence and it’s impact on development.

Stressing the need to address the ongoing insurgency in the country, Mulombo stated that security is key to peace and that there cannot be security without peace while calling on the present administration to tackle the insecurity problem in the country.

He acknowledged Nigeria’s significant contributions to peacekeeping operations, adding that the country has supported development initiatives for her people and has been an active partner in global multilateralism.

He said “the UN was formed 77 years ago after the devastating World War II to promote international peace and prosperity.

“Nigeria is an active member of the UN and over the years has made significant contributions to peacekeeping operations.

“Nigeria has supported development initiatives for her people and has been an active partner in global multilateralism.
“This year, the United Nations system in Nigeria wishes to celebrate Nigeria’s contributions to peace with a peace walk.

“We need to remember that we are all committed to peace, we are all committed to silencing that weapon and we are all committed to giving equal opportunity to every citizen in the entire world. We call on all member states of the United Nations to respect their commitments to silence the weapons. We call on all the member states to say never again to all the atrocities we saw during the Second World War”.

He said that UN helps member states to mobilize resources and is happy that some member states are already pledging their support to the humanitarian crisis occasioned by flooding in different parts of Nigeria.

Mulombo also said that the UN systems in Nigeria are working with ministries to respond to the flood problems and also put in place a plan to prepare for future crises.
