The federal government has hinted at plans to scale up the Special Agro–Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme to 27 additional states across Nigeria by the first quarter of 2026.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during the groundbreaking ceremony of the SAPZ project in Ijaiye, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Represented by the minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, the vice president described the programme as a significant pillar in Nigeria’s drive towards agro-industrial transformation, economic inclusion, and job creation.

Eight states, including Oyo, Kaduna, Kano, Cross River, Kwara, Imo, Ogun, and the Federal Capital Territory, are onboard the initial phase of the SAPZ programme, which is being implemented in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).

Shettima said the government is working with AfDB to roll out the programme to the remaining 27 states in phases, starting with 10 states in the first quarter of 2026, subject to financing agreements.

“We are laying the foundation for agro-industrial hubs that will empower agro-processors and farmers, stimulate local economies, and make Nigeria a competitive player in global markets,” Shettima said.

He said, “The SAPZ initiative is not just an infrastructural project; it’s a bold declaration that Nigeria’s future lies in transforming its abundant agricultural resources into value-added products that fuel industries, generate employment, and uplift farmers.”

He added, “It is a product of a strategic partnership between the federal government, state governments and international development partners.

This collaborative effort underscores our shared belief that sustainable development in agriculture is achievable only through unity, innovation, and shared responsibility.”

Shettima lauded the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, for his commitment to agricultural development, describing the event as a testament to the spirit of partnership and shared vision vital to our nation’s progress.
