After over a year of protracted delays, the pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Engr. Kayode Olubunmi Ojo, has described the appointment of Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya as the 16th substantive vice-chancellor of the university as complying with due process.

He stated that the appointment marked a “logical conclusion” to a challenging process.

Engr. Ojo noted that the selection journey, which began in earnest on July 28, 2025, has ended a 14-month leadership challenge that saw three different acting vice-chancellors occupy the seat in succession.

“This is a matter that has lingered for over fourteen months,” the pro-chancellor stated, “leading to the appointment of three acting vice-chancellors, and even the reassignment of a former council chairman.
He stated that it is, therefore, with great relief and satisfaction that they announce the appointment.

He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu , the Visitor to the University, for his interest and intervention in the process.

The pro-chancellor noted that the president’s passion for education and confidence in the ability of the Governing Council to manage the delicate situation played a significant role in arriving at a successful outcome.

“I hereby specially appreciate the opportunity given, as well as the trust reposed in me, by our education-loving President,” he said.

He also lauded the minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Moruf Alausa, for his insistence on transparency and compliance with extant laws throughout the selection process.

The pro-chancellor extended appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the appointment, including members of the Selection Committee, the Chancellor, Council members, the University Management and Senate, the Federal Character Commission, security personnel, and the press.

Addressing other candidates who competed for the position, Ojo commended their courage and integrity.

“To all the contestants who made it to the final stage, you have fought a good fight. Your qualification to reach this far is a clear testament to your competence and merit,” he said.

He urged the newly appointed vice-chancellor to embrace inclusiveness and unity in steering the affairs of the institution.

“Your appointment should not be seen as a winner-takes-all victory. You must reach out to your fellow contestants, tap into their experiences, and share your vision with all stakeholders.”

He passionately appealed for collective support to rebuild and reposition the University of Nigeria, describing it as a critical moment in UNN’s history.

“Let us rally around the new vice-chancellor to revamp our ailing university. This is the only University of Nigeria, and we must all take pride in its restoration”, he said.
