Armed men suspected to be herdsmen have invaded Yelwata community in Guma local government area of Benue State, killing three farmers while three other farmers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
A resident who did not want her name in print, said the suspected armed herders attacked the community yesterday, shooting sporadically at anyone on sight.
A youth leader, Achii Matthias, who spoke to newsmen yesterday, said the killing of the few people who refused to go to camp caused a protest in the community.
Several people were reported to have blocked the Makurdi/Laafia/Abuja Highway, protesting the killing, displaying the dead bodies.
According to him, three people were killed and three others were injured. “Our people are protesting because despite the presence of about 200 security men in Yelwata and its environs, the militia herders still attacked today (yesterday) in broad daylight.
He said, “As I am talking to you now, the security adviser to the governor and chairman of Guma LGA are here assessing the situation.”
When the governor’s special adviser on Security and Internal Affairs to the Governor, Joseph Har, was contacted, said that the attack happened in a community close to Yelwata.
Har said, “It’s true there was an attack today. It happened in a community near Yelwata; three people were killed and three others were injured. The road that was blocked has been opened.”
When contacted, the police command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, said she would respond to the incident.
“Please, I will soon get back to you on the incident,” she said.
Yelwata community was attacked on Friday, 13th June, 2025, where over 200 farmers, including women and children, were killed in the midnight invasion of the area.
