Senate To Investigate Rising Flight Crew–Passenger Clashes

The Senate Committee on Aviation has announced plans to investigate recent high-profile confrontations between flight crew members and passengers, vowing to restore public confidence in the Aviation sector.

The move followed two recent controversial incidents at Abuja and Lagos Airports, respectively, that have sparked nationwide debate.

LEADERSHIP recalls that last week, iconic fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, blocked an aircraft from taking off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Days later, another passenger, Comfort Emmanson, was forcefully removed from an Ibom Air Uyo–Lagos flight after reportedly refusing to switch off her phone and assaulting a female crew member. A viral video of the incident showed her slapping an air hostess who insisted she comply with aviation safety rules.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, in a statement on Tuesday, described the incidents as “too dangerous for silence” and stressed that they demanded urgent action.

“In the exercise of its constitutional powers, the committee will be engaging key regulatory bodies, operators, security agencies, and public interest groups to establish the facts, review existing procedures, and ensure that any necessary corrective measures are swiftly implemented,” he said.

Senator Abdulfatai added that the committee will not tolerate lapses that compromise safety or professionalism.

“We will not allow procedural gaps or lapses in enforcement to undermine safety, professionalism, or public trust in our aviation system. The Senate Committee on Aviation will ensure accountability at all levels,” the lawmaker stated.
