The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Rano local government area, Muhammad Nazir Yau for three months over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and misappropriation of funds.

The Assembly said the suspension was to allow for a full investigation into allegations leveled against him by councillors in the LGA.

The decision followed the submission of an interim report by the House Committee on Public Petition, chaired by the Majority Leader, Hussaini Lawan Cediyar Yangurasa, during plenary on Wednesday.

The Assembly directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to instruct the vice chairman to take over in acting capacity pending the outcome of the investigation.

Among other accusations, Yau was accused of instigating conflict among political leaders and councillors, selective distribution of government resources to political allies, selling government-supplied fertiliser above the ₦20,000 approved price, mismanagement of market revenues, unauthorised sale of market stalls and shops, and disrespecting party elders and stakeholders.

During a committee session on August 11, Yau denied several of the allegations, but admitted to increase the price of fertiliser by ₦2,000 above the approved rate.

The committee cited Section 55(1-6) of the Local Government Law 2006 in affirming his suspension.

It also ordered that all financial and administrative records of the council be submitted within seven days.

The House, presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore, adopted the committee’s recommendations in full.
