Students have commended the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing it as a game-changer in the country’s education sector.

At a recent education expo in Lagos, several beneficiaries shared how the Fund has positively impacted their academic and personal lives.

Chiamaka Oshite, a Mass Communication student at the University of Cross River State, described the financial support as a lifeline, enabling her to purchase textbooks and participate fully in classwork without falling behind.

For Aisha Falalu, a Biology student at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina, the loan has reduced her reliance on a N20,000 monthly allowance from her parents. She now covers expenses for practicals, printing assignments, and transportation, making her daily life more organised.

Khadija Sonibare, a Pharmacy student at the University of Ibadan, said the assistance has eased the burden on her father.

“The loan has reduced the financial pressure on the person sponsoring my education. I can focus more on my studies without worrying about school fees or constantly asking my dad for money,” she explained.
Samuel Udeh, a History and International Studies student at the University of Uyo, said the programme is helping him pursue his ambition of becoming a diplomat and eventually opening a radio station.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, described the loan as a transformative initiative by President Bola Tinubu to expand access to higher education by removing financial barriers.

“This is a transformational initiative by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He is committed to ensuring the programme starts well, runs smoothly, and remains sustainable. It’s not just about funding education; it’s a pillar of change and a revolution in the country’s educational landscape,” Sawyerr said.
Educationist Muda Ojo noted that academic-related expenses can be overwhelming for many Nigerian students.

“NELFUND’s loan bridges this financial gap, covering tuition and upkeep allowances so students can focus on their studies instead of juggling multiple jobs. The application process is straightforward and accessible online, allowing students nationwide to benefit,” he said.

Since its launch on May 24, 2024, NELFUND has disbursed over N81 billion for tuition and upkeep allowances to 396,252 students in more than 214 tertiary institutions across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT, as of August 7, 2025.
