Labour Party (LP) has condemned the chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mohammed Shehu, for defending the planned pay rise for politicians in the country.
The interim national publicity secretary of LP, Tony Akeni, in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, described the alleged pay rise for politicians as “an insult to the intelligence of Nigerians” and accused the government of prioritising the comfort of politicians over the welfare of ordinary citizens.
He emphasised the dire economic situation faced by many Nigerian workers, whose current minimum wage of N70,000 is described as “miserable” in today’s economy.
The LP spokesperson warned that neglecting the welfare of workers in favour of politicians could lead to public anger and fuel inequality in the country.
“We call on Nigerians to unite in the fight against corruption and elite greed, it is a collective mission for the sake of future generations.
“As the 2027 elections approach, LP urges Nigerians to stand together to rescue Nigeria from what it described as a government consumed by greed and corruption. The upcoming elections is a battle for survival, hence we call for unity in the fight for a better future for the country,”he said.
