Yobe PHCB Launches State-Level Leadership Challenge For LGA Chairmen

The Yobe State Primary Health Care Board (YSPHCB) has officially launched the State-Level Primary Health Care (PHC) Leadership Challenge for Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen, aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and improving governance at the grassroots.

The initiative was unveiled during a one-day orientation held on August 27, 2025, at Amiigo Hotel, Kano, with the participation of LGA Chairmen and PHC Directors from across the state.

In a statement, the Board’s information officer, Adamu Saidu Abba, said the orientation was designed to build the leadership and management capacity of participants, enabling them to effectively coordinate and sustain PHC programmes in their respective LGAs.

Declaring the event open, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Alhaji Isa Bukar, stressed the importance of strong and accountable leadership in driving quality healthcare service delivery adding that the challenge would provide a framework for LGA leaders to demonstrate commitment to the health sector through measurable results.

The executive secretary of YSPHCB, Dr. Babagana Kundi Machina has during that event, gave an overview of the challenge, reviewing Yobe’s 2024 performance and outlining priority advocacy areas for Executive Chairmen to champion.

Similarly, the Director of Immunization and Disease Control, Dr. Umar Chiroma, presented key indicators and expectations, while the State Immunization Officer, Dr. Lawan Yau, showcased a Gantt chart detailing the roadmap for implementation.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, the ALGON Chairman and Damaturu LGA Chairman, Alhaji Bukar Adamu, conveyed the feedback of council chairmen, commending the initiative and outlining their expectations for improved resources, collaboration, and accountability.

The orientation, according to the organizers, is expected to enhance leadership capacity, deepen collaboration with development partners, and strengthen funding and governance for primary healthcare delivery across the state.

The event was formally concluded with the launch of the State-Level PHC Leadership Challenge by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Isa Bukar, on behalf of the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana.
