Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Legislative Council has rescinded the impeachment of Hon. Mathew Danjuma Yare, the speaker and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyalist, a day after removing him from his position.

The council’s decision to withdraw the impeachment comes amid calls for unity and peace from various stakeholders, including AMAC chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu.

The motion to impeach Yare, passed on Monday by eight APC council members led by Deputy Speaker Tony Onoja, sparked controversy and swift action. Yare’s impeachment was primarily based on his failure to adhere to the council’s mandate of holding bi-monthly plenary sessions.

At a press conference held on Tuesday, newly-elected Speaker, Hon. Jankaro Ibrahim announced the withdrawal of the impeachment, stating, “We have decided to withdraw the impeachment of Dr. Hon. Mathew Danjuma Yare, on the grounds that he refused to adopt the orders of the chamber.”

He added that the council is willing to extend a month for Yare to rectify his shortcomings.

Ibrahim emphasised the necessity of this decision for maintaining peace, saying, “We have to go with their advice. So, we want to beg our supporters and the general public to support us in lifting this impeachment.”

He warned Yare that he must use this time wisely, “If after one month, he has not amended his ways, we are going to do this impeachment properly in his presence.”

Councillor Matthias Aliyu, representing Wuse Ward, reinforced the sentiments shared by Ibrahim, stressing that the move is aimed at fostering a peaceful environment in AMAC.

“You know, we want Abuja Municipal Area Council to be a peaceful place. That is the reason why we have decided to yield to the advice of our stakeholders.

“This is the last chance and the last opportunity we are giving to him to carry this house in one voice. We want peace, and we want this government of Honourable Christopher Zakka Maikalangu to succeed,” he said.
