The participation of South African sprinter Bayanda Walaza in next week’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, is now in question.

Walaza was named in a 49-strong South African team for the event this week.

The 19-year-old was leading the men’s 100m race when he sustained a hamstring injury at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, last month.

This injury has cast doubt on his involvement in Tokyo, with Athletics South Africa (ASA) stating that his future participation is contingent upon the results of a standard medical examination.

ASA confirmed that the medical team has assessed the extent of Bayanda’s injury, and the organisation will make an official announcement regarding his participation status.
