The federal government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat mishap in the Borgu area of Niger State which claimed the lives of about 32 people on Tuesday, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the urgent need for improved safety measures on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja, the minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the federal government’s condolences to the families of the victims as well as the government and people of Niger State.

“It is with a heavy heart that the federal government received the distressing news of the boat mishap in the Borgu area of Niger State. This tragedy is particularly painful, coming barely four months after devastating floods wreaked havoc in Mokwa, also in Niger State,” the statement read.

Idris assured that the federal government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), would provide necessary support for survivors and families of the deceased.

He also commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for its swift response, which ensured that all passengers were accounted for during the rescue operation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy. The federal government, through NEMA, will work closely with the Niger State government to ensure prompt relief and assistance,” Idris said.

The minister urged Nigerians to prioritise safety when using inland waterways, particularly stressing the importance of wearing protective life jackets during boat journeys.

“Safety precautions can make the difference between life and death. No one should embark on a boat journey without wearing appropriate safety gear,” he warned.

In response to recurring incidents on the nation’s waterways, Idris said the federal government had directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a massive nationwide sensitisation campaign to educate the public on safety protocols during inland water transport.

“We pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wish the survivors a speedy recovery,” he added.
