Immediate-past governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has described his two-day visit to Owerri, Imo State capital, as memorable, highlighting the warmth, openness, and hospitality he was accorded throughout his engagements.
El-Rufai disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, who confirmed the details of his principal’s trip to the South-East city.
According to him, speaking after a series of activities, El-Rufai said his trip achieved its purpose of deepening engagements for national unity and progress.
“Owerri has been a great visit. We were well-received everywhere we went. From religious institutions to engagements with stakeholders, political associates and the traditional institution, it has been a consistent pattern of welcome and openness,” the statement quoted El-Rufai as saying.
The former governor noted that he was moved by the grace and dignity displayed by the people and institutions he interacted with, calling it an exemplary demonstration of unity across Nigeria’s divides.
“I am overwhelmed by the grace and dignity displayed by the institutions and personalities that have received us. It is an exemplary display of a Nigerian citizen being made to feel welcome outside of his home area, amidst all the attempts at division,” El-Rufai added.
During the visit, he delivered the 2025 Odenigbo Lecture at the invitation of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri
“I thank the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri for inviting me to the 2025 Odenigbo Lecture. It was wonderful to address participants at the women’s conference of the Anglican Diocese of Egbu. His Highness Eze Stephen Kemjika Agumanu of Nekede was a most gracious host,” he added.
The former governor also recalled the interactive session held on the first night of his stay in the city, describing it as a standout moment. He particularly appreciated the solidarity shown by Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who attended the session despite being unwell.
“Owerri has been kind and open, and we have enjoyed the time, and we leave with great memories,” El-Rufai concluded.
