The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, CP Dahiru Muhammad, has solicited the support of the media for his new strategy to tackle crime and drug abuse in the state.

CP Dahiru made the appeal when members of the Correspondents Chapel paid him a courtesy visit in Dutse.

He stated that the media is pivotal in promoting security consciousness within society and enlightening the public on their role in maintaining peace and stability.

“The media not only report on police activities but also build public confidence in security institutions which makes it easier for the public to provide the police with vital information,” the CP stated

The newly posted commissioner noted that his new approach would focus more on collaboration with communities as well as creating a sense of ownership in matters related to public safety and well-being.

“This time, we will extend our relationship with the community beyond security. We aim to build public confidence in the police and help everyone understand the role they are expected to play in promoting peace and stability.

“Some of the strategies are Proactive Policing: Creating public confidence and trust in the police; Diligent Investigation and Prosecution: Ensuring fair and prompt dispensation of justice and Community Policing: Strengthening ties with local communities,” CP Dahiru disclosed.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Muhammad Zangina Kura, said the delegation was at the commissioner’s office for familiarisation and to strengthen the working relationship with the command.

Comrade Zangina added that there has been a decades-long cordial relationship between the command and journalists in Jigawa State, and they are ready to build on it with the new CP.

“Security is a collective responsibility. On our part, besides reporting the efforts of the police, we enlighten the public on the role they are expected to play in different situations. Sometimes, we also draw the attention of security agencies to issues so they can take proactive measures to avert crime or a breakdown of law and order,” he said.

He also assured the CP of the chapel’s commitment to work hand-in-hand with the command to implement the new strategy, which aligns with the broader objectives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, to promote inclusiveness in combating crimes and maintaining peace and stability in Nigeria.
