Residents fearing reprisal by his colleagues were unsettled in their homes.

Cross River State  police spokesperson SP Irene Ugbo who  confirmed the incident stated that Sgt. Peter Ikwen was shot dead by gunmen.

“I have just gathered that a police sergeant was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the early hours of today and his rifle was taken away by the assailants,” Ugbo said.

The police command promised to get to the root of the matter, warning that it would never fold its arms and watch its personnel killed in a very barbaric manner.
