The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has reported that the national electricity grid experienced a collapse at 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday.

Today’s collapse makes it the eighth time that the national electricity grid has collapsed so far in 2025.
According to the NISO management, the disruption was caused by the tripping of a Generation Company (GenCo), which led to a significant load drop. This initial failure subsequently cascaded to other GenCos, causing a widespread system disturbance and collapse of the national grid.

NISO confirmed that restoration efforts began promptly at 11:45 a.m., starting with the supply to Abuja from the Shiroro power plant. Since then, substantial progress has been made in restoring electricity supply across the country.

The operator was continuing to work on full restoration and has appealed for public patience during this process.
An in-depth investigation into the immediate and root causes of the disturbance has been launched. The findings of this inquiry will guide the development of remedial and preventive measures aimed at forestalling future occurrences of grid collapse.
