The chairman of the commission Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, made the revelation yesterday in Kano at a One-day media workshop for journalists in the Northwest and the Northeast.

“A total of 1,440 projects were tracked, valued at approximately N271.054 billion.

“Of these, 767 projects valued at N112.737 billion were in the Northeast, and 673 projects valued at N158.317 billion were in the Northwest”, he stated.

He also revealed that cash recoveries totalling N7.269 billion were made in the Northwest, N43.335 million in the Northeast, and an additional $1.06 million was recovered from the Northwest.

Speaking about assets, the chairman also revealed that the ICPC recovered 14 buildings, 25 plots of land, and three farmlands within the said period of time.

However, the ICPC chairman explained that only four convictions were recorded by the commission in the Northwest and none from the Northeast from a total of 171 cases investigated in the two regions, although only 15 cases were filed before the court, with nine from the Northwest and six others from the Northeast.

While calling on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Whistleblower Bill to empower citizens to fight corruption, he also appealed to the media to support the efforts of the commission through investigative journalism.

“I appeal to the media to support our efforts through investigative journalism, holding leaders accountable with facts, and avoiding sensationalism that could undermine trust in our collective fight”, he stated.

He further quoted the NBS/UNODC’s corruption figures in Nigeria, stating that the five most critical problems affecting the country are the high cost of living, crime/insecurity, unemployment, corruption, and healthcare.

“The first three are major drivers of corruption, while healthcare suffers a consequence of it. In other words, corruption is not just another problem, it is the thread that worsens the others, and the most dangerous challenge we must frontally address as a nation,” he said.

He added that the figures from the UNODC survey reveal that Northwest records the highest bribe refusal rate in the country, at 76 percent, with Northeast recording 60 percent.

“This shows that ordinary people are willing to stand against corruption. We at the ICPC salute this steadfastness,” he declared.
