The Olympic champion achieved a best height of 2.36 metres for gold, following Geordie Beamish’s surprising victory in the men’s 3000m steeplechase on Monday.

South Korea’s Sanghyeok Woo took silver with a best of 2.34m.

The Korean raised the stakes at the climax of a thrilling competition by skipping 2.36m, with the bar then raised to 2.38m.

However, he was ultimately unsuccessful, allowing Kerr to race around the track and soak in the applause from a raucous crowd at the National Stadium.
