The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has said that the suspension of the 4 per cent Free on Board (FOB) levy earlier introduced on imports by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) will play a vital role in stabilising the aviation industry.

The association said suspending the levy will protect thousands of direct and indirect jobs and reduce inflationary pressures affecting businesses and households.

The airline operators who lauded President Bola Tinubu and the minister of Finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun, over the suspension said the move demonstrates responsive governance and a deep commitment to economic stability.

The association disclosed that the enforced levy would have dealt a severe blow to airlines already grappling with multiple economic headwinds, including the high cost of aviation fuel, foreign exchange shortages, and maintenance challenges.

The suspension, it stressed, provides critical relief to operators and prevents a ripple effect that would have triggered fare increases and further strained passengers.

“The suspension is a clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment, protecting critical sectors of the economy, and promoting sustainable growth,” the operators stated.

AON  described the finance minister as a “listening minister” whose swift and patriotic response to industry concerns reflects fairness, sensitivity, and diligence in carrying out the President’s mandate.

According to the group, the suspension will play a vital role in stabilising the aviation industry, protecting thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and reducing inflationary pressures affecting businesses and households.

“This bold and thoughtful intervention will safeguard the aviation sector, protect jobs, and ensure Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global marketplace,” the association affirmed.

Reiterating its readiness to partner with the Federal Government, AON pledged to continue working with stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation sector, describing the industry as a strategic driver of economic growth and national development under the Tinubu administration.
