Oba Of Benin Rejects Iyaloja Role In Edo, Affirms Iyeki As Market Leaders

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has rejected the introduction of the Iyaloja system in Edo markets, insisting that Benin markets are traditionally headed by palace-backed Iyeki.

The monarch stated this when the daughter of President Bola Tinubu and Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, visited his palace to announce her plan to inaugurate Pastor Josephine Ivbazebule as Iyaloja of all markets in Edo State.

Oba Ewuare II explained that the Iyeki have long-standing cultural and spiritual roles in Benin markets, far beyond coordinating trade activities.

“Iyaloja is alien to us here in Benin. In Benin, you are in the home of culture — we have our culture here. I have discussed this matter with my chiefs and those who are knowledgeable,” the monarch said.

“Do you know the role of Iyeki in Benin culture? Every Iyeki has a special relationship with the palace. Are you aware that every Iyeki has a cultural role to perform inside every market? The Oba does not interfere so long as the Iyeki does what is expected of her in the shrine of a particular market on behalf of the Oba,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the palace, Chief Osaro Idah, further clarified the cultural institution.

“Iyeki is independent in every market, like the Oba Market, Ogiso Market and others. The traders select their leaders from within, after which the person is presented to the palace for confirmation,” Idah said.

He stressed that unlike the Iyaloja concept, which may be recognised in Yoruba culture, Benin tradition does not support a centralised market head.

“The novelty of a general Iyeki is alien to Benin custom and tradition. Iyeki is particular to each market. No one has the right to control another in a different market. The Iyeki in Oba Market has no role to play in Ogiso Market. The Oba established the markets for all in the society,” he said.
