This marks a major step towards reducing the state’s housing deficit and improving people’s access to affordable homes.

The houses were handed over to Governor Mai Mala Buni by the minister of Housing and Urban Development, who was represented by Mathius Iliya Kastula at the Maisandari Housing Estate in Damaturu, the state capital.

Buni, represented at the event by the commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Ahmad Buba, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the estate transfer to the state government.

He said the initiative reflects the President’s commitment to supporting states in addressing critical developmental needs.

The governor said, “This project is not just about buildings, but about restoring dignity to our people by giving them access to affordable and decent shelter.”

In their remarks, the minister and the state controller of Housing, Muazu Abubakar, commended Buni for his foresight in buying the property to benefit the people.

They described the acquisition as a practical demonstration of his administration’s determination to improve the welfare of the people, particularly civil servants and low-income earners.

Buba explained that of the 208 housing units built by the federal government, Yobe State bought 176. Plans are underway to complete and rehabilitate the remaining 32 uncompleted units to ensure they meet acceptable standards before allocation.

He said the acquisition would reduce the housing deficit, ease pressure on urban centres, stabilise rents, create jobs through rehabilitation and maintenance, and stimulate growth in adjoining neighbourhoods.
