Bayelsa State coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Okpalifo Charity, has warned corps members against involvement in illicit drug trade and abuse, saying the scheme’s uniform is not a guarantee against arrest and prosecution.

Speaking during the 2025 Batch B, Stream 2 participants rally against drug abuse at the permanent Orientation Camp in Kaiama, Koloama/Opokuma LGA, Okpalifo urged corps members to shun all forms of drug abuse and drug-related crimes.

Represented by the camp director, Sir Anumaka Raymond Kennedy, she highlighted the dangers of drug abuse, stressing that, as future leaders, it can ruin their opportunities to render quality leadership to the nation.

“You are ambassadors of the NYSC and of your families. Drug abuse is not just illegal; it destroys your potential and your ability to contribute meaningfully to society.

“We want you to leave this orientation camp not only with skills and discipline but with a clear understanding that your choices today will define your future tomorrow,” Okpalifo said.

She decried the rate of insane youths roaming the streets as a result of drug-related illnesses, warning that being a corps member does not give them immunity against arrest by NDLEA if caught abusing drugs or dealing in the illicit drug trade.

“Wearing the NYSC uniform is not a shield against the law. If you are found dealing in or consuming illegal substances, the law will take its full course. We will not tolerate any act that tarnishes the image of this noble scheme,” she warned.

Earlier, the head of NDLEA, Donald Enyiekere, thanked the management for the attention given to the lecture and rally, stating that with the involvement of the NYSC, the war against drug abuse in Nigeria will be a success.
