Human rights activist and legal practitioner, Barr. Deji Adeyanju, has commended President Bola Tinubu for nominating Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying it was a reflection of Tinubu’s knack for competence.

In a statement on Thursday, Adeyanju said the appointment was a pleasant surprise, noting that he had initially expected the President to choose someone from his immediate circle in Lagos or Osun State.

“I wish to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for nominating Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This appointment reflects the President’s recognition of competence,” Adeyanju said.

He described Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Professor of Law, as a man of scholarship and integrity whose appointment demonstrates inclusiveness, especially as the first indigene from Kogi State’s minority Ijumu community to head the electoral body.

“Professor Amupitan’s record of scholarship and service makes him a deserving choice to lead the Commission at this time in our democracy. I must admit that I had expected the President to appoint someone from his immediate circle or from Osun State, but this decision comes as a pleasant surprise,” Adeyanju added.

Recall that President Tinubu had on Thursday announced the nomination of Professor Amupitan as the new INEC Chairman during the National Council of State meeting, citing his integrity, apolitical stance, and proven record of service as key factors in the decision.
