Bauchi State Police Command has emerged as one of the top performers in the country in securing convictions for gender-based violence (GBV), a feat the authorities say reflects the command’s renewed commitment to delivering justice for victims.

The assistant commissioner of police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Yahaya Abdulkadir, disclosed yesterday during activities marking the 2025 Customer Care Services Week held at the command’s headquarters.

He said the police in Bauchi have intensified efforts to ensure GBV cases are thoroughly investigated and promptly prosecuted in line with the law. This, he said, has significantly boosted conviction rates and discouraged potential offenders.

“Our GBV section has been adjudged the best in Nigeria in terms of prosecution and convictions,” ACP Abdulkadir stated. “Just recently, a team of investigators from Abuja visited the Command to understudy our methods.”

However, he lamented lack of cooperation from some parents of victims. He revealed that many guardians often refuse to testify in court, thereby delaying or jeopardising prosecution.

“This reluctance slows down the process and sometimes denies victims the justice they deserve,” he added.

He commended the First Lady of Bauchi State, Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed, for her unwavering support in the fight against GBV. He noted that her advocacy has helped ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted and survivors rehabilitated.

In a related development, the state commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, vowed to work hand-in-hand with the judiciary to prevent the premature release of convicted criminals through political or legal interference.

“We are collaborating with the judiciary to ensure that convicted offenders do not find their way back to the streets unjustly,” he said.

The commissioner appreciated stakeholders for their consistent support and reaffirmed the command’s dedication to strengthening community policing and upholding the rule of law across Bauchi State.
