Governors across Nigeria have commended the former director-general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside, for his intellectual contributions to leadership and governance through the unveiling of his two new books.

The books Beneath the Surface and Leading in a Storm were formally presented to the public in Abuja yesterday.

Peterside’s ‘Beneath the Surface’ challenges Nigerians to look beyond appearances to understand the deeper forces shaping governance and politics. It warns that while economic indicators may appear positive, citizens continue to suffer from high food prices and systemic corruption fuelled by patronage-based politics. he book advocates reforms such as spending caps, transparency, performance-driven governance, and stronger citizen engagement, arguing that progress requires honesty and institutional redesign.

His second book, ‘Leading in a Storm,’ offers practical leadership strategies for crises and guides navigating diverse crises that threaten personal, organisational, and national progress.

At the book’s presentation, the governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, described Peterside’s works as a mirror and a manual for those entrusted with public leadership.

Represented by Alhaji Usman Bala Muhammad, former Chief of Staff to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Governor Yusuf congratulated Dr Peterside’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of leaders grounded in ethics and excellence.

“I express my sincere gratitude for your deep thoughtfulness. You are willing to share your side and guidance for those navigating adversity while remaining true to their institutions.
“To everyone here this morning, I urge you to read these books, engage in discussions, and apply their lessons to our country’s governance and future.”

In a demonstration of support, the Kano Governor announced the purchase of 200 copies of the books, saying it would be distributed across governance and educational institutions in Kano State to promote reflective leadership and institutional learning.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno also commended Dr Dakuku Peterside for his outstanding contribution to leadership thought and national development by publishing his two new books.
Speaking at the public presentation of the books, Eno, represented by the State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Akwa Ibom State Liaison Office, TPL Aniekan Akpan, said actual development begins with leadership that serves, listens, and inspires hope.

He noted that the Arise Agenda of his administration is rooted in the same philosophy of servant leadership — one that places people at the heart of governance.

The Governor described Dr Peterside’s works as timely reflections on the challenges and responsibilities of leadership in a changing world, urging leaders at all levels to embrace knowledge, humility, and service as pathways to national progress.

The event, chaired by elder statesman Alhaji Isa Hayatu, attracted eminent Nigerians, including the Governors of Katsina, Kano, and Taraba States and Senator John Eno, the minister of state for industry.

The event also featured tributes from the representative of the Governor of Kastina and other corporate leaders.
