Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Umudike branch, has urged female scientists in the country to pursue excellence through teamwork, persistence and mentorship.
The branch coordinator, Prof Mabel Onwuka, stated this while declaring open a grantsmanship workshop organised for the members at the National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike.
Onwuka expressed pride in their resilience and accomplishments and encouraged them not to give up on their ambitions but to “always give their dreams a second chance.”
She attributed the branch’s success during her tenure to teamwork and collective effort, noting that several milestones were achieved through unity and dedication.
Delivering her valedictory speech ahead of the branch’s October 30 election, she urged them to prepare for the OWSD’s 7th General Assembly scheduled for November 3-7 in Bogotá, Colombia.
She underscored the need for them to take advantage of the conference to widen their scope of knowledge and networking “as science is our voice and excellence must be our brand.”
In a keynote lecture, a community nutritionist, Charles Nkwoala, stressed that researchers should develop the right mindset, structure and strategy when applying for grants.
He said they must ensure their proposals align with the funder’s vision, noting that “the goal of a grant is to support scientific advancement and address global problems.”
He highlighted the importance of networking and charged the participants to attend academic and professional conferences for meaningful engagement rather than mere attendance.
In a response on behalf of the members, Oluomachi Uchenna appreciated Onwuka and the members of the executive committee for their quality and visionary leadership.
