The national coordinator of Nouvelle Perspective, Hon. Jim Chumezie Okolo, yesterday joined other dignitaries at a high-level conference at the United Nations office in Abuja to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

With the theme, “Securing Our Future,” the event brought together representatives from youth and student bodies across Africa and beyond to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the global body in promoting peace, justice and development.

Speaking at the conference, Hon. Okolo, a renowned election observer and advocate of democratic governance, highlighted the pivotal role the United Nations has played over the decades in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting global stability.

According to him, the United Nations has been instrumental in supporting the conduct of credible elections, promoting rule of law, and defending human rights across the world.

“Through its agencies and missions, it has helped nations in transition to democracy by ensuring inclusive participation, protecting civil liberties, and encouraging transparent governance,” he said.

He further stressed that democracy remains a shared responsibility that requires the collective commitment of governments, civil society, and citizens to thrive.

Addressing the youths, Hon. Okolo charged them to take active interest in the affairs of their nations and contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding and sustainable development.

“The future we seek to secure depends largely on the choices young people make today,” he said.

“I urge African youths to be proactive, to equip themselves with knowledge, to participate in governance processes, and to become ambassadors of integrity and accountability in their communities.”

He commended the United Nations for its continuous engagement with young people through capacity-building initiatives and peace advocacy programmes, describing them as vital tools for nurturing the next generation of global leaders.

The conference ended with a renewed call for partnership and collective action toward achieving the UN’s vision of a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world.
