Motorists Decry Failed Portions Of Federal Road

Users of the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia federal road have lamented failed portions of the highway and appealed to the federal and state governments to to fix it.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP, yesterday, on one of the worst portions at Ozu Abam in Arochukwu local government area, they said the intervention had become urgent.

A driver, Paddy Mba, lamented how his vehicle was stuck on the portion for hours last weekend after a heavy downpour that lasted for hours.

Similarly another driver, Kalu Omeaku, who ply Ohafia-Bende-Umuaha-Aba route, sharing Mba’s experience complained bitterly over the situation.

He said, “About three weeks ago, the situation forced most of us to go through the Ohafia-Abiriba-Uzuakoli-Umuaha route which is over 20 kilometres farer.”

Contributing, a commercial cyclist, operating between Ohafia and Abam communities Chibunna Ndukwe, called for “urgent need to save the portions.”

One of the leaders of the community and a palm fruit plantation owner around the area lamented over the situation, adding that the situation could cutoff the community.

According to Alice Ogbu, a middle-aged farmer in the community, it is not only motorcycles or vehicles that have been experiencing the ugly challenge.

“One has to be extremely careful while walking across the slippery spots, especially while carrying a load on the head for obvious reasons,” she explained.
