There was pandemonium in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital on Tuesday, as some hoodlums attacked the State secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and destroyed their properties.

The incident occurred as the party was preparing for the inauguration of its state executives on Tuesday.

The suspected political thugs, who came in their numbers to the ADC State Secretariat located in Basiri area of Ado Ekiti, ensured that any thing they could lay their hands on including chairs, tables, canopies, musical instruments, motorbike, among others, were destroyed.

The ADC National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, while speaking on the development in Ado Ekiti, condemned the unprovoked attack, describing it as an undemocratic act.

The former governor of Osun State said it was unfortunate and very shameful that products of a democratic process can exhibit such despicable acts in the name of politics.

The hoodlums, it was gathered, had in the mid-night went to set a portion of the party secretariat and canopies on fire, and came back later in the day for the second time to destroy another set of chairs arranged for the inauguration of the State exco of the party when the party members were about starting the inauguration of the executives.

Several other properties worth millions of naira were also destroyed as gunshots rented the air
as party members scampered to safety.

The former interior minister, who said that it was difficult for him to adequately express his disappointment over the incident, called on security agencies to ensure that lives and property were protected and restore order in the state.

Aregbesola, who further described the incident as a terrible decline to racism, said: “When you see undemocratic people undermining democratic process the way we have witnessed here, it’s a terrible declination to racism.”

He pointed out that the beauty of democracy is the freedom to associate, participate in all the activities and festivals of democracy, such as open meetings, rallies and campaigns.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ekiti State command, SP Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police has ordered investigation into the matter, with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.
