Take Decisive Steps To Tackle Insecurity, Onaiyekan Urges Govt

Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja Diocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has hinted that there is pervasive deep frustration at the apparent inability of the government to restore peace and normalcy, despite frequent assurances.

The clergyman stated this yesterday in Abuja at a one-day prayer summit organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to pray for the nation.

“The past week has seen a fresh wave of reports of imminent terrorist attacks targeting the FCT. The government has been issuing assurances of being in control of the situation.

“But the low level of trust of the general public in their government is rendering such assurances of little effective value. It is therefore natural that we see a major recourse to prayer by Nigerians of all creeds, in mosques and churches.

“There are rumours making the rounds that our government may perhaps be lacking not just the ability but the political will to do the needful,” he stated.

He called on the government to take decisive steps to tackle the spate of insecurity in the country.

Similarly, the president of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh said Christians gathered at the Ecumenical Centre to seek God’s intervention on the forthcoming elections and the spate of insecurity in Nigeria.

“Now that our country is preparing for the next elections, one of the major things we should do to support our nation to have a peaceful and nonviolent election is to come together and pray.

We are people of faith. We believe that anytime we call upon the name of our Lord, with sincerity, He answers us. So, CAN decided that it would be a good thing for us to gather, particularly at this time of campaigns, so that the Lord would grant us a very peaceful electioneering campaign and very peaceful elections,” he said.
