Preparations are in full swing for the inaugural edition of the Benin Unity Football Cup, a landmark grassroots football competition sponsored by Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents the Edo South Senatorial District.
The press conference, draw ceremony, and official unveiling of trophies for the competition took place inside the Media Centre at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The Benin Unity Football Cup, organised by the Edo State Football Association (Edo FA), aims to promote unity, community engagement, and youth empowerment by providing a platform for local talents in Edo to showcase their footballing skills.
The competition is scheduled to commence on Sunday, 23 November 2025, marking the start of a new era for grassroots football development in Edo South.
The Organising Committee, chaired by Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, has pledged to deliver a well-organised and impactful competition that reflects Edo’s rich football culture and heritage.
Fred Newton stated that outstanding players identified during the tournament will be developed and marketed to clubs both within and outside Nigeria, ensuring that promising talents receive genuine opportunities to advance their careers.
Senator Neda Imasuen, renowned for his commitment to youth empowerment, described the initiative as a long-term investment in the future of young people in Edo.
“The Benin Unity Cup is more than just a tournament; it is a statement of hope and belief in our youths,” Senator Imasuen said. “We are creating a platform that will turn dreams into reality and talents into legacies.”
The tournament is expected to feature teams from across the seven local government areas of the Edo South senatorial district and will also be open to male adults.
