In a remarkable comeback after a 20-year absence from the world medal table, Nigeria’s Taekwondo team has returned to prominence, thanks to the outstanding performance of Elizabeth Anyanacho at the ongoing World Taekwondo Championships in Wuxi, China.

Anyanacho, the reigning African Champion competing in the -67kg category, exhibited exceptional skill and determination as she triumphed over Uzbekistan’s Sobibronova O. in a gripping contest, winning the first round 8–6 and the second 10–9. This victory propels her into the semi-finals, ensuring Nigeria will secure at least a bronze medal.

Reacting to the historic achievement, Grand Master Tayo Popoola, President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, praised Anyanacho’s success as a testament to her hard work and perseverance.

“I have been closely following the championship and I am overjoyed by Elizabeth’s progress. She has shown immense dedication over the years, and this result confirms that Nigeria is making its mark on the global Taekwondo stage,” Popoola stated.

The Taekwondo Federation President expressed her strong belief that Anyanacho has the potential to go all the way and make history.

“She has two more fights ahead of her to become the world champion in the women’s -67kg category. Winning those will make her the first Nigerian to ever claim gold at the World Championships. We are fully behind her as a Federation and as a nation,” Popoola added.
