Amid an upsurge in boat accidents on the inland waterways of the National Hydro Power Producing Areas (N-HYPPADEC) benefiting states, the Commission has purchased 4,000 life Jackets and other materials for distribution to operators in Niger state.

The commission also distributed 850 units of 13 HP Power Tillers, of which Niger state has the highest number, 165 units.

The Commission’s Managing Director, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, disclosed this yesterday in Minna at the flag-off of the materials by the Niger state Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago.

He said it was a practical and symbolic move to improve the lives and livelihoods of the people and meet the mandates of mitigating the suffering of the N-HYPPADEC, benefiting people.

He said, “The Commission is distributing 850 units of 13 HP Power Tillers, out of which 165 units are for Niger State, 4,000 Life Jackets, and a wide range of Relief Materials to the good people of the state”.

He also said relief materials, including a cash donation of ₦10 million, 500 bags of NPK Fertiliser, 50 cartons of pesticides, and 100 cartons of herbicides, would be distributed to the flood-affected communities in Mokwa and other local government areas of the state.

He said, “Some floods occurred when the Kainji Dam Management opened additional spillways during the dry season. We have also recently awarded a contract to distribute planters and knapsack sprayers to the affected communities in our member states”.

“These initiatives are significant as they are a reaffirmation of N-HYPPADEC’s mandate to promote sustainable community

development in the hydroelectric power-producing areas,” he added.

He said that, in addition to the mandate, the distribution of materials was also fully aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasised empowerment, agricultural productivity, and community resilience.
